How many implants do you actually need?
It's one of the first questions people ask once they start looking into implant-retained dentures - and it depends on more than you might expect.
Most patients need 2–4 implants, with the exact number depending on your bone quality and the surgeon's plan. There isn't a single fixed number that applies to everyone.
What determines the number
The referring oral surgeon or implant dentist assesses your jawbone density and volume to determine how many implants can be placed securely, and how many the overdenture design actually needs to stay stable. More implants generally means more stability, but it also means a longer surgical step and a higher cost - so the plan is tailored to your case, not maximised by default.
How the implants and the denture work together
Paul's ball-retained overdenture is designed to attach securely to whichever implants are placed. Each implant carries a small ball attachment that clicks into a socket built into the denture - a well-proven, confirmed system.
The two-part cost
Because more implants generally means a higher surgical cost, it's worth understanding the two separate pieces: implant surgery typically costs $2,500–$5,000 per implant, and Paul's overdenture typically costs $4,000–$8,000. Combined, most patients invest $10,000–$25,000+.
Finding out your specific number
The only way to know how many implants your case needs is an assessment. Paul discusses the prosthetic side with you first, then coordinates with an oral surgeon or implant dentist who assesses your bone and confirms the surgical plan.

Common questions
Does bone loss affect how many implants I can have?+
Some degree of bone loss is common in long-term denture wearers and doesn't necessarily rule out implants - the surgeon assesses your specific bone volume and density to determine what's possible before Paul designs the overdenture.
Is more implants always better?+
Not necessarily - the number is tailored to give your denture the stability it needs without unnecessary surgery or cost. Your surgeon and Paul will recommend a plan suited to your case.
What system does SA Precision Dentures use?+
Paul works with the ball-retained (stud) system - each implant carries a small ball attachment that clicks into a socket in the denture. Bar-retained systems and All-on-4 aren't part of what's offered here.
