What to Expect

Living with new dentures: a week-by-week timeline.

Knowing roughly what to expect at each stage makes the adjustment period feel far more manageable.

Everyone adjusts at their own pace, but most people follow a broadly similar pattern in the first month. Here's a realistic guide.

Week one

Expect a sense of fullness, extra saliva, and possibly some mild soreness as your mouth registers the new shape. Stick to soft foods and a review appointment early in the week helps ease any pressure points before they become a bigger issue.

Week two

Speech usually starts feeling more natural, particularly if you've been reading aloud at home. Eating gets easier as you build confidence with slightly firmer foods, chewing evenly on both sides.

Weeks three and four

Most people feel largely settled by this point - speech close to normal, and a wider range of foods manageable. Some sensitivity to very hard or sticky foods can persist a little longer, which is completely normal.

Beyond the first month

By now, most patients have stopped consciously thinking about their denture day to day. If you're still experiencing persistent discomfort or significant difficulty at this stage, it's worth a follow-up appointment rather than continuing to push through it.

Everyone's timeline is a little different

This is a general guide, not a strict schedule - some people adjust faster, others take a little longer, and that's completely normal. Paul is available throughout for adjustments if something doesn't feel right at any stage.

FAQS

Common questions

How long does it take to get used to new dentures?+

Most people adjust within a couple of weeks. A sense of fullness and mild soreness in the first few days is normal, and a quick review appointment resolves most pressure points early.

Is it normal to still feel some discomfort after a month?+

Occasional sensitivity to hard or sticky foods can persist a little longer, but persistent discomfort at this stage is worth a follow-up appointment rather than continuing to push through it.

What helps speed up the adjustment period?+

Reading aloud at home helps speech settle faster, and easing into firmer foods gradually, chewing evenly on both sides, helps build eating confidence.
