Getting started
Do I need a referral to see a dental prosthetist?+
No. A dental prosthetist is qualified to assess, make and fit dentures directly, so for most denture work you can book with Paul without a referral from a dentist.
Can I go directly to a dental prosthetist without seeing a dentist first?+
Yes, for denture treatment you can come straight to Paul. If your case involves extractions or implants, he'll coordinate with your dentist or surgeon for those specific steps.
What happens at the first consultation?+
Paul examines your mouth, talks through your history and what you're hoping for, explains your options and likely costs, and answers your questions. There's no pressure to decide on the day - you'll get a clear quote to take away.

What should I bring to my first appointment?+
Any existing dentures, your health fund or DVA/concession card, any referral or documentation you have, and a list of medications and relevant health conditions.
The denture process
How many appointments does it take to get new dentures?+
Most full and partial dentures involve several short appointments over a few weeks - consultation, impressions, bite, a try-in you approve, then fitting and follow-up. Paul gives you a timeline at your consultation.
Does getting dentures hurt?+
Making dentures isn't painful - impressions and measurements are comfortable. New dentures can feel odd at first and may cause minor sore spots as you adjust, which Paul eases with quick adjustments. That settling-in is normal.
How long does it take to get used to new dentures?+
Most people adjust within a couple of weeks. Eating softer foods cut small at first and reading aloud at home both help speed it up. Any pressure spots can be quickly adjusted.
Comfort & eating
Will I be able to eat normally with dentures?+
In time, yes, though it takes practice. Start with softer foods in small pieces and chew evenly on both sides. Some very hard or sticky foods stay trickier, but most people eat a full and varied diet.
Will I be able to speak clearly?+
Speech usually adjusts within days. A few sounds can feel different at first - reading aloud at home trains your tongue and lips quickly.
Can I use denture adhesive, and is it safe?+
Adhesive is safe used as directed and can add confidence, especially early on. But needing more and more of it usually signals the fit has changed and a reline is due - worth mentioning to Paul.
Care & maintenance
How do I clean and care for my dentures?+
Take them out and brush daily with a denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner - not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive. Rinse after meals, and handle them over a folded towel or basin of water so they don't break if dropped.
Should I take my dentures out at night?+
Generally yes. Leaving them out gives your gums a rest and reduces the risk of irritation and infection. Store them in water or a soaking solution overnight so they don't dry out.
How long do dentures last?+
Often several years, but your mouth keeps changing underneath them, so relines are usually needed along the way and a replacement eventually. Regular check-ups help you get the most out of them.
Cost, funds & DVA
How much do dentures cost?+
It depends on the type and your situation, so Paul gives an accurate quote at your consultation. Health fund rebates, DVA cover and concession schemes can all reduce what you pay - see the denture cost page.
Do you accept health funds?+
Yes. SA Precision Dentures is a Medibank Private and BUPA preferred provider and accepts other major funds, with on-the-spot claiming where your fund allows. DVA Gold and White Cards are accepted too.
Does Medicare cover dentures?+
No - Medicare doesn't cover dentures for the general adult public. Cover comes through private health extras, DVA, or the state concession scheme instead.
